YOUR RESUME & KEY POINTS TO CONSIDER

  • Make the first section your professional summary For an experienced candidate it is important to put in a professional summary at the very top. This is a quick way to concisely convey your core competencies and experience. Don't make this too fluffy and don't use every adjective in the book!
  • Highlight relevant skills Use strong keywords and phrases that will be picked up by modern technology "asset management”, “cost management”, "project management", “design management” etc. Whether it’s being scanned by a recruiter or by technology this is what gets noticed on a resume.
  • Make your most recent position the most comprehensive ..... or especially your last 5 years of experience. Your "professional experience" is the bulk of the resume and this detail should account for about 75% overall. Include company name, job title, length of service, department, company overview, key responsibilities and achievements.
  • Include company descriptions If you have worked at a company that isn’t a household name, adding notable details about the organisation is imperative i.e. what it does, number of employees, annual revenue, industry sector, project values etc. This will save the hiring manager time and increase your chances of interview.
  • Numbers, revenue and statistics If your role contributed to any increases in projects, sales, efficiencies, staff turnover, OHS records etc. make it loud and clear! No need to fully explain them; the hiring manager will ask for more details during the interview and thats when you expand.
  • Emphasise your achievements. Limit your responsibility descriptions to the best five or six most important points per position and keep them concise. Then detail four or five of your proudest and most relevant achievements per position; this is a more powerful way to showcase what you can contribute to your next employer and what is important to you!!
