Last Friday, our crew took part in the MATES in Construction Connector course. It was a great session that reminded us how important it is to look out for each other, not just on the job, but in life too.

So, what’s a Connector?

It’s simple: a Connector is a mate who notices when someone’s struggling and knows how to connect them to help. You don’t have to be a counsellor or a professional – just someone who’s willing to listen, ask the tough question, and point a mate in the right direction.

Over the 4-hour course we learned how to spot the signs, how to start a conversation, and how to make sure people get the right support (without forgetting to look after ourselves as well). The training also included LivingWorks safeTALK, which is known worldwide as best practice in suicide prevention.

Why does this matter? Because construction can be tough, and no one should go through hard times alone. Training like this helps break down the stigma and builds a culture where we’ve got each other’s backs.
