WA’s iconic $430million Fremantle Traffic bridge project is heading into the final stages.
The transformative Swan River Crossings project is steadily progressing in Fremantle, delivering a new and iconic Fremantle Traffic Bridge that will significantly improve travel for vehicles, pedestrians, cyclists and river users. This major infrastructure upgrade involves replacing the ageing bridge with a modern structure featuring two traffic lanes in each direction, wider shared paths and improved navigational clearances for boats and kayaks.
With a budget of $430 million, jointly funded by the Australian and Western Australian Governments, the project is one of the largest transport infrastructure investments in the port city. Construction began in 2024, and supports around 1,400 jobs, providing meaningful work for local trades and professionals.
To complete key works, the existing Fremantle Traffic Bridge will close from 1 February 2026 for up to 12 months, with community support measures including additional train and bus services and improved traffic staging in place.
Once finished, this state-of-the-art crossing will enhance connectivity across the Swan River, boost safety, and support Fremantle’s future growth.
