$2.8 Billion Alkimos Project Delivers Major Progress Milestone
Western Australia’s largest water pipeline project has reached a significant construction milestone, with more than half of the 33.5-kilometre Alkimos-to-Wanneroo trunk main now installed as part of the State’s $2.8 billion Alkimos Seawater Desalination Plant development.
The project will play a critical role in securing WA’s long-term water supply, connecting the future Alkimos Seawater Desalination Plant to Water Corporation’s existing network and delivering up to 50 billion litres of climate-independent drinking water each year.
More than 1,600 locally manufactured steel pipe sections have already been laid, highlighting the project’s strong commitment to supporting Western Australian industry and local supply chains. The pipeline has been manufactured in WA using local materials, creating economic opportunities across manufacturing, logistics, construction and engineering sectors.
Beyond its importance for water security, the Alkimos project continues to generate substantial employment opportunities throughout the construction phase, with ongoing demand for civil construction professionals, engineers, project delivery teams, supervisors, HSE specialists, trades and skilled infrastructure personnel.
With construction continuing through to 2027 and the desalination plant scheduled to be operational by 2028, the project is expected to remain a major source of jobs, investment and economic activity across Western Australia for years to come.
