WA’s $1billion Tonkin Highway Extension & Thomas Road Upgrade Project is underway!

A landmark infrastructure initiative worth over $1 billion is now underway in Perth’s south-east, delivering major economic, safety and community benefits. The Tonkin Highway Extension and Thomas Road Upgrade will generate an estimated 4,400 jobs for Western Australians, boosting employment across construction, contracting, supply chains and First Nations businesses.

Stretching 14 kms from Thomas Road to South Western Highway, and duplicating 4.5kms of Thomas Road, the project will significantly reduce congestion and improve freight efficiency in one of the fastest-growing corridors. More than 60,000 vehicles are expected to use the upgraded route daily, easing pressure on local roads in Byford, Armadale, Kelmscott and Gosnells.

Benefiting from joint funding by the Australian and WA governments, this project delivers strong returns on investment: safer journeys, faster travel, opportunities for local businesses, and improved infrastructure for cyclists, pedestrians and equestrian users. Set for completion in late 2028, it exemplifies forward-thinking investment that supports growth, jobs and community wellbeing.
