Major construction commences on $330m METRONET New Midland Station

Major construction has started on the METRONET New Midland Station project, a cutting-edge train station in the center of Midland, Western Australia, after development authority was granted last month.

The modern three-platform station near Midland Town Centre would improve connectivity to Midland Gate Shopping Centre and Health Campus.

Premier Roger Cook praised the government’s investment in public transport infrastructure, including the New Midland Station, which focuses on Midland’s future and preserves the area’s rail heritage. The project includes platforms, a pedestrian overpass, a 12-stand bus interchange, a multi-story car park, a 1-kilometer shared path, a kiosk, bike shelters, and operations facilities.

Midland MLA Michelle Roberts highlights the new station as a significant investment, benefiting residential communities, businesses, and the elderly. It would also provide connections to the Bellevue Railcar Manufacturing and Maintenance Facility, generating employment.

Its construction will involve closing the western end of the station’s passenger car park and the east Helena Street car park. The station aims to improve connectivity, reduce travel time, and create local jobs and business opportunities in Perth’s northeast.

The $330 million project, funded jointly by the Australian and Western Australian Governments, features a contemporary facility reflecting Noongar culture and the Midland Railway Workshops. The project aims to improve services and travel times for local commuters, boost the economy, and offer sustainable alternative transport options.

The Midland Junction Alliance has been awarded a $246.7 million contract to design and build the new Midland Station, which is expected to be operational in early 2025. The new station will improve public transport experiences, create connections with key services, and help Midland develop into a thriving commercial and residential center. The Alliance, consisting of McConnell Dowell Constructors, Georgiou Group, Arcadis Australia Pacific, and BG&E, aims to ensure trains continue operating to Midland during the construction period, reducing the impact on commuters. The project is expected to be an exciting addition to the future of public transport in Midland, preserving the area’s rich rail history.
