MAJOR WA ROAD UPGRADE TO SUPPORT 600 CONSTRUCTION JOBS

The transformation of Tonkin Highway has reached another major milestone, with NRW awarded the contract to deliver significant upgrades between Roe Highway and south of Welshpool Road. The project forms part of the broader Tonkin Highway Corridor program jointly funded by the Australian and Western Australian Governments.

The upgrade works will include widening Tonkin Highway to six lanes, construction of new grade-separated interchanges at Welshpool Road East and Hale Road, and delivery of new shared cycling and pedestrian infrastructure. Construction will be delivered in stages, with the Welshpool Road East interchange prioritised first to maintain local connectivity.

Western Power relocation works are already underway, with major construction expected to commence later this year. The project is anticipated to support around 600 jobs annually during construction, providing a significant boost to WA’s civil infrastructure and construction sectors.

The corridor upgrades form part of the long-term transformation of Tonkin Highway, complementing major projects already underway including the Tonkin Highway Extension and Thomas Road Upgrade. Once complete, the upgrades will improve freight efficiency, reduce congestion and enhance safety along one of Perth’s most important transport corridors.
