Construction Begins on $107 Million METRONET Electric Ferry Expansion

Construction has officially commenced on Perth’s new electric ferry fleet as part of the $107 million METRONET on Swan Ferry Service Expansion, marking another major milestone in Western Australia’s transport infrastructure pipeline.

The project will deliver five locally built electric ferries, new ferry terminals at Applecross and Matilda Bay, and supporting infrastructure designed to improve connectivity across Perth’s growing transport network.

The investment is expected to generate employment opportunities across marine construction, manufacturing, engineering, project delivery and transport infrastructure sectors. With the ferries being built locally in Henderson and major terminal works progressing, the project will provide ongoing benefits for WA businesses, suppliers and skilled workers.

Beyond job creation, the project represents a significant investment in Western Australia’s economy, supporting local industry participation while improving sustainable transport options for future generations. The expansion is also expected to boost tourism, improve accessibility and encourage further investment along the Swan River corridor.

As major METRONET projects continue to roll out across the State, investments of this scale are helping drive economic growth, strengthen local supply chains and create long-term employment opportunities across WA’s infrastructure sector.
